Beverly Bond: Founder and CEO of BLACK GIRLS ROCK! (BLACK GIRLS ROCK!, INC)

This is Beverly Bond. Beverly is a former model and DJ, businesswoman, philanthropist, mentor, and community leader. Beverly arrived in New York at the age of 17 in pursuit of a modeling career in which she began modeling for Wilhelmina Models. At Wilhelmina she was booked by clients Nike, Nordstrom, Diesel Jeans, and Guess. Beverly’s hobby of record collecting grew into an interest for turntables. For fun, she began spinning at the local clubs becoming one of New York’s top DJs within a year. Beverly’s versatile talent and work has landed her celebrity clientele, such as Alicia Keys, Sarah Jessica Parker, Erykah Badu, Sean “Diddy” Combs, Derrick Jeter, Seinfield, Martha Stewart, Jay-Z, and many more.

In 2006, Beverly founded the organization BLACK GIRLS ROCK! ( Black Girls Rock, Inc.), a mentoring organization committed to empowering young Black Women and Girls to strive for greatness and excellence. The organization also serves as counter to the negative images of Black Girls and Women in mainstream media. Shortly after that, she created its annual awards show in 2010 of the same name which celebrates and highlight the beauty, achievements, and contributions of Black Women and Girls in their careers and communities as well as famous Black Women (i.e., Queen Latifah, Ruby Dee and others) who have been both positive and inspirational role models to Black/African Women and Girls the world over.

The BLACK GIRLS ROCK! annual awards show premiered in 2010 on BET with 2.7 million viewers and ranked no. 1 on the charts for Black households. BLACK GIRLS ROCK! earned a NAACP Image Award for outstanding Variety Series/Special. BLACK GIRLS ROCK! is a groundbreaking show in that it is the first of its kind to highlight the beauty and achievements of Black Women and Girls in-depth in front of a national audience. Beverly’s achievements and contributions has earned her several high recognitions, such as Ebony’s “Most Influential Blacks in America,” Ebony’s Power 100 List, from 2008-2012, and Essence’s “40 Fierce and and Fabulous Women Who are Changing the World” along with First Lady Michelle Obama, President of the Republic of Liberia, Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, and rapper/actress Queen Latifah, and others.

BLACK GIRLS ROCK! has had its share of haters (I will post about that later) because many people hate to see Black Women and Girls telling the whole world that WE ROCK! The audacity of those “inferiors” to get on national television and say that they rock is what they were thinking consciously, unconsciously, and subconsciously. Some people seem to take comfort in seeing Black Women and Girls wallowing in self-pity and self-hatred and not walking around with self-pride, self- respect, and confidence. Shame on them!

Beverly is one of the many Black Men and Women who have inspired me to do this blog and inspire me to join in the work of helping African Women/People to RE-claim our history, heritage, and culture and highlight our beauty, achievements, and contributions on planet earth. I salute this AMAZING SISTER!

  1. She is. I would love to meet her myself. I am sooo proud of what she is doing to counter the anti-Black woman phenomena.
